The easiest way to design a nursery is to first pick the crib set. You've planned out the perfect nursery, from the furniture set to the wall color - but hold on a second! When choosing baby bedding there are a lot of things to consider, so make your choice carefully, and keep these things in mind:
- First are foremost, consider your newborn's comfort. Bedding should be soft, with 100% cotton being one of the best choices. Knit cotton, flannel, and high thread count woven cotton are all excellent choices.
- Babies have a lot of "accidents", so buy bedding that is machine washable (another great reason to choose cotton).
- Crib bedding needs to fit the mattress tightly, to prevent any risk of suffocation. If you are worried about the fit of your sheets, you can buy elastic straps that clip onto the crib sheet (under the mattress) and hold it in place.
- Crib bedding sets are cute and very convenient, but they may be unnecessary. You should realize that items commonly included in a bedding set (like bumper pads and comforters) are not recommended for very young babies. So if you are trying to save money, consider buying individual pieces rather than a full bedding set. If you're worried about coordinating, don't be. By purchasing separates, you actually give yourself more freedom to be creative with the nursery.
- When all else has been addressed, spend some time picking bedding that will fit the rest of the room, including your furniture.
Buying bedding within your budget can be a concern, but take into account that you may use it longer than you think. If you get good-quality bedding, you can use it on both the crib and your toddler bed, allowing you to use it for several years. Think about family size, too. If you planning on multiple children, then think about gender neutral baby bedding like the Vintage bedding set, that can be reused over and over with each new baby. If you are sure there will be no more kids, however, then buying high-quality (and expensive!) baby bedding is not so important. But whatever you decide, you should make sure you have several sets on hand - you're going to need them!
